Pemba Lodge

Pemba Lodge is located in the Zanzibar Archipelago off Tanzania’s coast, on Shamiani Island near Pemba Island. The region is rich in history as a major stop-off point in the Arab trade routes down the East Coast of Africa, and thus is a fusion of both Arabic and East African cultures.

The lodge itself is owned by a local, and holds a philosophy of responsible tourism – this is a true eco lodge, and having just five rooms offers guests a large degree of privacy and tranquillity on an otherwise untouched island.

Accommodation is a challenge here, with the aim of making it as comfortable as possible with minimum environmental impact. Simple techniques used in construction make a big difference, such as raising the bungalows on stilts to provide cool draft as a replacement for an air conditioning unit. Furniture is recycled from former fishing boats, giving the decor a rustic feel. Lighting is available from solar powered lamps.

In keeping with the eco theme, the lodge aims to be self-sufficient and organic in its restaurant. Dishes range from fusion to local specialities, but all contain a variety of freshly caught seafood and organic produce, with an ever-developing garden to provide homegrown fruit and vegetables.

Evidently, motorised watersports are not encouraged at the lodge, but a wide range of more peaceful activities, such as kayaking, diving and snorkelling are. Bush trails and bird watching are also on offer, and for those not wishing to move very far, Swahili massage techniques are on offer.
