Shangri-La, Rasa Ria at Kota Kinabalu

The global chain Shangri-La have set up this resort at Kota Kinabalu, on the jungled coastline of the Malaysian segment of the island of Borneo.

While here, expect to experience paradise-like tropical beaches and sunsets, with the additional surprises of jungle wildlife at your doorstep - peacocks, rabbits, squirrells and iguanas, as well as the region's famous orang utan.

Accommodation is offered in one of two wings - Garden or Ocean. All rooms have private balconies and of course the usual luxuries with a Malaysian twist, while those in the Ocean wing have access to their own private outdoor bathtubs, and the wing's own swimming pool.

Food options abound, with three restaurant venues offering Western, Indian and Japanese fare; and its most interesting Tepi Laut Makan Street designed to replicate Malaysia's famous street food culture. A coffee and golfer's terrace also serve food and drink.

A spa is also on offer, as is the 18 hole Dalit Bay Golf Club for golfing enthusiasts. Tennis courts and a gym are available at the resort as well.

On the water, a huge range of activities are available, from wind surfing to jet-skiing. Furthermore, charter of the local lepa-lepa boats is an option.

Guests can also take full advantage of the rainforest location, with nature excursions and canopy walks with the chance of seeing a range of wildlife including civets, macaques, deer and fruit bats. Guests can also participate in an Orang Utan conservation project.
