Tugu, Lombok

Just before reaching the tourist mecca of Bali, there is the island of Lombok which offers an equally magical Indonesian experience. Nestled in between the ocean, Mount Ringani, an 18 hole golf course and miles of pastoral countryside, the experience at Tugu could not be more serene or rustic.

Decorators have really gone to town with the fittings for the rooms at Tugu. All have a very distinct local feel, yet manage to feel unique depending on what grade of villa is required. For example, some villas are lavishly decorated with bright colours, tapestries and so on, while others have a more sparse, natural and wooden feel designed to replicate a traditional Lombok hut. All, however, are top of the range in terms of comfort.

As you might have guessed from the accommodation, providing a guest experience closely related to the location is key to the philosophy at Tugu. Some resorts look like they could be anywhere in the world; Tugu makes sure you know it's in Lombok. This feeling is reiterated with the wonderful open air restaurant, offering Indonesian and other Far Eastern cuisine; while the bar combines comfort and traditional handicrafts to make your drink as relaxed as possible.

Guests wishing to get even more involved in the local culture can go for a cooking class, which involves buying ingredients from a local market, learning how to cook them in the local fashion, and then eating in the local way (knives and forks nonessential).

Other activities also continue the local theme, where guests can learn local drumming styles, make 'air tuak' palm wine, and brew herbal teas. Also on offer are diving, snorkelling, golf and other more conventional activities.

An Indonesian retreat of this calibre would not be complete without a spa, and this spa is particularly special due to its location within an open air temple, and guests are offered a variety of traditional treatments.
